The Data Download: Highlights from IBC2025

Sep 25, 2025

Looking back at IBC2025, one thing stands out: this was the year sustainability moved from compliance conversation to operational strategy. Across four days in Amsterdam, the discussions weren’t about whether broadcasters should act on environmental challenges, but how they can do it whilst improving performance and reducing costs. Here’s what we learned, and why it matters for what comes next.

When Sustainability Became Strategy

We’ll be honest – we hoped for interest in GreenDot, but the response exceeded every expectation. From day one, the conversations weren’t theoretical; they were practical discussions about implementation, cost savings, and operational efficiency. Broadcasters, post-facilities, and content creators didn’t just want to understand real-time carbon intelligence, they wanted to see how it fits into their existing workflows.

The breakthrough moment came when visitors realised GreenDot isn’t just environmental monitoring, it’s operational intelligence that happens to track carbon impact. As Fraser demonstrated in our walk-and-talk video, even monitoring a single laptop revealed insights we hadn’t anticipated (like that 140-watt spike when someone plugged in their phone). Scale that to broadcast infrastructure, and the potential becomes transformational.

Beyond Sustainability

Whilst GreenDot generated the headlines, the most sophisticated conversations happened when we showed how it integrates with our complete IBM portfolio. IBM Aspera Lite making high-speed transfer accessible to smaller operations, DataSprint file transfers with embedded carbon tracking, IBM Apptio providing cloud cost optimisation with environmental visibility, and IBM Turbonomic using AI to optimise resources across multiple KPIs simultaneously.

This wasn’t just about individual products, it was about complete operational intelligence that optimises for performance, cost, and carbon impact as complementary objectives rather than competing priorities.

Industry Conversations That Matter

Some of the week’s most valuable moments happened in the corridors and networking areas:

Fraser’s Panel Session on “The Responsible Media Revolution” alongside experts from NVIDIA, V-Nova, Veritone, and Media Press Group perfectly captured the industry mood. The consensus was clear: intelligent data management and automation don’t just help the planet, they help the bottom line. Energy-efficient data centres, smarter storage, AI-driven metadata. It all adds up to lower costs and better performance.

Meeting with MTSS and Barbara Lange reinforced what we’re hearing everywhere: broadcasters want sustainability solutions that work within existing workflows, not bolt-on compliance tools. Her enthusiasm for real-time carbon intelligence that delivers operational benefits alongside environmental impact was exactly what we hoped to hear.

The timing was perfect with the launch of the Media Climate Accord at IBC2025, MTSS’s ambitious initiative to unite the global media industry around net-zero emissions by 2040. The lunch discussion around the MCA highlighted just how ready the industry is for practical, measurable sustainability action. It’s one thing to commit to climate goals; it’s another to have the operational intelligence tools that make those commitments achievable.

And the industry response extended beyond the show floor:

Ready for Intelligent Operations?

The conversations at IBC2025 weren’t just about today’s challenges, they were about building operational foundations for an industry that understands performance and sustainability as complementary strengths. We’re putting the finishing touches on GreenDot ahead of its launch and will be following up with everyone who expressed interest over the coming weeks. If you haven’t done so already, register your interest to be among the first to experience this operational intelligence in action.

The message from IBC2025 was unmistakable: the future belongs to operations that are intelligent by design, efficient by default, and sustainable by choice. That conversation doesn’t end in Amsterdam, it’s just getting started.

For those who couldn’t make it to Amsterdam, or want to continue conversations that started on the show floor, we’ll be sharing more insights, case studies, and practical guidance on how intelligent infrastructure monitoring can transform operations.  Whether you’re curious about real-time carbon intelligence with GreenDot, looking to optimise file transfers with IBM Aspera, or exploring how AI-driven resource management can transform your infrastructure costs, we’d love to continue the conversation.
